Abandoned coastal fish farm strands yacht
Maritime Rescue had to help a woman and two children off a catamaran, The Amazing Marivin, which ran aground on Tuesday night at an abandoned fish farm off the coast between Juan Grande and Castillo del Romeral, in The municipality of San Bartolomé de Tirajana.
About 20:00 on Tuesday, the owner of The Amazing Marivin, under an American flag, which had set sail from Gran Canaria ‘s capital heading for Barbados, in the Caribbean, alerted authorities of the situation and asked for help.
This fishing facility is abandoned. It was not marked or illuminated. The yacht owner decided to stay on the boat through Tuesday night to take care of the catamaran. Being trapped and in the middle of the fish farm for more than twelve hours appears to have caused the 15-meter boat´s two propellers and the two rudders to break.
At around 09.30 am on Wednesday, Reprosub, a company specialised in diving and rescue, based in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, were advised to carry out the rescue of the stricken catamaran. The boat was towed to the Arguineguín wharf, where it arrived at around 7:30 p.m.
Editor´s Note: Questions must be asked as to why debris is being left in the coastal environment, unmarked and uncharted. It is known that there are several fish farm facilities that are abandoned off the coast, isn’t it time that they were removed? They are clearly a hazard.
