On-form Las Palmas took on 3rd from bottom Sporting Gijon at the weekend, looking for another 3pts after an excellent away game at Deportivo La Coruna earlier in the week, which saw LP move into 10th place in the La Liga premiership after winning 3-1.

On a hot and sunny las Palmas afternoon, the home team made a bright start winning a free kick in a dangerous position on the left wing. Tana plays a lovely ball to the far post where the unmarked Bigas heads home from close range. Las Palmas go 1-0 up in just 3 minutes.

Sporting hits straight back winning a corner. From the resulting cross, Luis Hernandez heads the ball just over for the visitors, when he really should have done better. Another chance goes wide following good work down the left from Sporting.

On 25mins, good build up play by the home team sets up Tana but his curling shot is just over the bar. 2 mins later, LP have the ball in the net but Viera is ruled offside following a great pass by Vicente.

Then in the thirty second minute Viera takes on and beats 2 defenders but ends up being fouled in a dangerous position, right on the edge of the box. Viera himself, takes the free kick, but his shot is well saved.

No more chances for either side before half time.

Las Palmas 1 Sporting Gijon 0 – Great start to the match with LP going 1-0 up in the 3rd min. Then after that, only a couple of chances for the home side and a few dangerous crosses from the visitors which put the home defense under pressure. Varas in the home goal still hasn’t had to make a save yet. LP have produced some good build up play but the final ball, has been missing.

LP start the second half on the attack with Roque breaking clean through on goal. But his lack of pace lets the covering defender back in who nicks the ball away for a corner. From the corner, Sporting clears and break down the left. Jony sees his left foot shot find the bottom corner and poor Varas can only pick the ball out of the net. 1-1.

On 52mins, Sporting break the offside trap again and they are clean through on goal. Somehow the centre forward puts his shot past the post, and a lucky escape there for the home team. Midway through the second half, LP bring on Willian and Momo to try and break down the stubborn Sporting defence.

Sporting look more comfortable now and LP look content with the draw.

Some sloppy play with LP losing the ball, putting the home defence under pressure. The 25,052 strong crowd want to see their team attack more, but again the home team are happy to play the ball around and keep the scores level. Both teams cancel each other out and the game ends in draw.

Final Score – Las Palmas 1 Sporting Gijon 1

The Verdict of The Saint  – After the start LP got, they should have gone on to win this game against their lowly opposition. But some good defending and quick attacking play, saw Sporting get a deserved draw.

After the form the home side have been in, I thought this would be another home win but the players looked tired and the second half was a struggle. With a game away on Tuesday night at Real Betis and another home game on Friday night against Espanyol, (20.00 KO), let’s hope they have enough energy to keep their unbeaten run going and hold on to their top half position.
