After the defeat away to Barcelona the previous Saturday, Las Palmas entertained Eibar last weekend.

Las Palmas put up a good fight against the mighty Barca and could have snatched a draw in the last few moments of the match before going down 2-1 with both goals coming from Luis Suarez. Jonathan Viera scored for LP.

Eibar from the Basque Country has one of the smallest grounds in the league with a capacity of just 6,267. They’ve had a solid start to the season with wins against Granada, Getafe and also picking up a couple of draws.

footy 4 octA really lively start to the game saw Adrian for Eibar hitting the bar with a left foot shot from outside of the box after just 40 seconds and within 2mins Araujo gets very close for the home side. His shot just missing the post and hitting the pole behind the goal, some of the crowd thought it was in! Then on 7 mins Eibar makes it 1-0. A great cross from Junca, sees the LP defence and keeper leaving it and the ball finds Saul Berjon at the far post for an easy tap in.

On 10 mins, Viera and Simon link up well down the right wing which sets up Viera for a great chance but somehow his shot just misses the far post. He should have levelled the scores there.

Another chance for Eibar on 15 mins, a quick break down the right and another good cross just about cut out by Garcia for a corner.

LP win a free kick in a good position just outside of the box but Viera’s shot is too high. Two good chances now fall to Roque for the home team, first one saved by the keepers legs where he should of done better and a header just going wide.

HT – Las Palmas 0 Eibar 1. A good open game tonight with both teams creating a few chances. LP are playing a more attacking line up with the full backs pushing on, but this is leaving them vulnerable at the back. We need to take our chances in the 2nd half and the build up play needs to be at a much quicker tempo.

Eibar win a free kick on the edge of the box but Berjon sees his shot go over the top. Wakaso’s left footed shot is easily saved by the Eibar keeper. Again Viera sees a shot go just wide.

Then on 62mins Eibar make it 2-0. The left winger deflects a shot which falls perfectly to Borja Baston. He controls the ball on his chest and shoots on the turn finding the bottom corner of the net. The home defence and crowd appeal for offside but due to the deflected shot, Baston was on side.

El Zahar comes on for the home side and soon gets involved. He goes down in the box looking for a penalty but nothing given.

On 67mins home crowd favourite Valeron comes on to try and lift his team and the supporters.

LP win a free kick in a good position but the shot goes straight into the wall.

LP keep the pressure on with a couple of corners but both times the header is just wide.

On 85mins, Willian puts Araujo through on goal who slides the ball under the keeper but the flag was already up for offside. Such a shame as it would have made it an exciting final few mins.

In added time, a last ditch tackle by Wakaso saves what looked like a certain goal for the away team.

Final Scores – Las Palmas 0 Eibar 2

The Verdict of The Saint – After a bright start and first half , LP found it hard to break down the Eibar defence and the attacking full backs failed to get forward enough in the 2nd half. They needed to take their chances and now playing in the top league they are getting punished by some good finishing from the visitors. One thing I would like to mention, and the 18,577 crowd made their feelings heard at the final whistle, is about the state of the pitch.

The centre of the pitch has enough sand to match the famous sand dunes of Maspalomas! It’s really poor and this is not helping LP play their passing game. The players are struggling to run with the ball. I find this strange as we live in the best climate in the world and the pitch should be the best. Time to look for a decent groundsman to help the players and produce a decent surface to play on.

Next game sees Las Palmas travel to Getafe on the 18th October. Next home game is against top of the league Villarreal on Sunday 25th October, 15.00 KO. Pio Pio!!!
