The Canary Weekend Tips 3-5 March 2017

Another Carnival filled weekend ahead as Las Palmas Carnival comes to an end  with the grande parade on Saturday and the so-called Funeral of the Sardine on Sunday. But don’t worry, Maspalomas is just getting started with their celebrations on Friday.

Its also the first weekend of the month so the Cabildo museums are open for free visits and the open comercial area Triana in Las Palmas offers a lovely weekend of activities and shopping promotions.

3-5 March, Las Palmas

Las Palmas Carnival

On Friday Body painting contest at 21:00 on stage in Parque Santa Catalina followed by a party in the designated Carnival leisure area, at the back of the Elder and Miller buildings and Plaza Canarias, from 00:00 to 04:30.

On Saturday The Biggest Parade on Gran Canaria with this year’s theme “Eternal Spring”. Starts at 17:00 from la Plaza de La Feria with over 200,000 participants all together and with hundreds of decorated cars and floats accompanied by this year’s crowned Carnival Queen, the Drag Queen, the Great Lady and the Junior Queen to the rhythm of the samba butacadas (drumming bands), comparsas (dance groups) and murgas (satirical singing groups), all travelling the coastal route towards parque Santa Catalina.

On Sunday the Sardine’s funeral procession starts at 19:00 from León y Castillo, at the height of the Metropole. The parade crosses the town to reach Las Canteras beach, with many dressed in black, mourning at the mock funeral, for the farewell party on the water to burn the “sardine”, along with all the excesses of the previous month, with fireworks.

4-5 March, Las Palmas 

Triana fin de semana abierto

Also this weekend Triana, the main commercial area, is celebrating their open weekend, with a full program of leisure activities and live music in the surroundings of Calle Mayor de Triana and all the  shops, as is tradition, open their doors to the public, for promotions and late shopping.

Children’s activities on Calle Mayor on Sunday between 11:00-14:00, and Plaza del Pilar Nuevo in Vegueta, with the usual Market of Crafts and Culture, between 11:00-12:00.

You can also enjoy some Canarian folkloric performances scheduled around various emblematic enclaves of the city: on Saturday, from 11:00 in the area of Santa Catalina Park ( On Calle Luis Morote ), on Sunday at 11:30 in Pueblo Canario and from 12:00 in Plaza del Pilar Nuevo in Vegueta.

4-5 March, Gran Canaria 

Museos en finde …

As with every first weekend of each month, the island network of museums run by the island council, the Cabildo de Gran Canaria, will open their doors for free visits.

Casa-Museo Perez Galdos, (in Las Palmas) Saturday and Sunday, from 10:00-19.00
Casa-Museo Tomas Morales, (in Moya), Saturday and Sunday, from 10:00-19.00
Casa-Museo León y Castillo , (in Telde), Saturday 10:00-22:00 and Sunday 10:00-19:00.
Casa-Museo Antonio Padron -Indian Art Centre (in Gáldar) Saturday and Sunday, from 10:00-19.00.
Museum and Archaeological Park Cueva Pintada (in Gáldar) Saturday, from 10:30-19:30 and Sunday, from 11:00-19.00. First visit on Saturday at 10:30 and Sundays at 11:00. Last guided tour on Saturday at 18:00 and Sunday at 17:30. Limited capacity.

3-5 March, Maspalomas

Maspalomas Carnival 

On Friday southern carnival season kickstarts with the Maspalomas International Carnival. In the morning  the announcer float travels through residential and tourist areas in Maspalomas, from Mercadillo de San Fernando at 11:00. The opening gala starts at 21:00 on the main stage, in the shopping center Yumbo.

On Saturday the election of the Carnival Queen on stage in CC Yumbo starting at 21:00. The gala is presented by model Jose Croissier and singer Tamara, who will also perform some of her great songs.  The magical night will feature composer and singer Michael Corradini and Fruela , known for his participation in the “The X Factor” competition in Britain.

On Sunday
its all about the young ones in the family with Children’s Carnival starting at 17:00 on Avenida Estados Unidos with bouncy castles, carnival workshops and surprises.
At 19:00  the election of the Children’s Queen 2017 on stage in CC Yumbo with lots of music and dance performances.

Saturday 4 March, Vecindario

El Mercado Agrícola de Vecindario

The Agricultural Market in Vecindario, ( held every two weeks) in La Karpa, in front of the Municipal Offices, this Saturday celebrates its VIII anniversary with tastings of black pig, potatoes, birthday cake, live music and with a raffle of produce boxes every hour. About 35 stalls selling vegetables, fruit, honey, flowers , Olives, jams, oil, bread, baked goods from 08:30 to until 14:00.

Saturday 4 March, Mogán

Carnaval Tradicional

Pre-Carnival celebrations with Traditional Carnival in Arguineguín starting at 21:00 in Plaza Pérez Galdós. Carnival tortillas, chocolate and music performances.

Sunday 5 March, Mogán, Puerto Rico 

Mercadillo Agrícola y Artesanal 

Every fortnight, on a Sunday, in an ideal setting surrounded by palm trees and greenery, a little canarian music playing in the backround, the Farmers’ and craft market is on from 08:30-14:30 in Parque urbano in Puerto Rico. Just a few steps away from the main bus stop, if you are coming from out of town.

Sunday 5 March, Tejeda 

Mercado Agrícola y Artesanal de Tejeda

A very different option from the Carnival celebrations is a lovely drive up to the mountains, to the central area of the Island, Tejeda and visit their small but very charming farmers and artisan market on Sunday morning.

From Maspalomas you can take the Global bus line 18 that goes to Tejeda

Sunday 5 March, Melenara, Telde 

‘Gastro Melenara’ 

Telde celebrates this Sunday starting from 10:30 ‘Gastro Melenara’ event in Melenara, an initiative that seeks to revive and revitalize this open shopping area just next to a beach, with a program of activities that revolves around gastronomy, children and music. Between 11:00-13:30 in the town  ‘Disfrutaventura’, activity for kids to promote fruit consumption among children through a story that features a strawberry, an orange and a lemon, and menu with fruit skewers, shakes and ice cream based on these products. Restaurants and shops open on Sunday to enjoy delicious food and shopping.
And, until 14:00, the Dixieland Baton Rouge band livens up the open shopping area Melenara with their musical repertoire.

A nice day to get to know the coastal area of Melenara in the Municipality of Telde and the lovely local beach, which is very popular among locals.

Sunday 5 March, Mogán 

Carrera Popular de Arguineguín 2017

The urban running competition with two distances, 5 & 10 km and with different categories is happening on Sunday in Arguineguín from 09:00-14:00, with the start at 10:00 With a maximum participation of 500 runners. The start and the finish is on  Avenida de la Playa de Las Marañuelas at the height of the access to the ramp of the beach.

When there is a sports event happening it also means road closures in Arguineguín
