The Canary Weekend Tips 28-30 July

The last weekend of July is coming up with plenty of delightful events all around the island, here are some of our highlights. In the south its all about live Soul music on the beach in San Agustín and for Mogán its the last full weekend of the annual Virgen del Carmen festivities. The annual Puerto Rico sea fishing competition, free outdoor concerts and much more on offer by way of summer activities.

Maspalomas Costa Canaria Soul Festival 2017

San Agustín beach will once again play host to the Maspalomas Costa Canaria Soul Festival this weekend, in a three day event marking the 100th birthday of the legendary soul singer and epic performance artist Rufus Thomas, whose image graces this years main poster. When there is a big event like this one going on it also means some traffic changes in the area. The GLOBAL bus company will reinforce bus routes 1, 5, 25, 30 and 36 over the weekend to facilitate the smooth transit of the thousands of attendees.

28-30 July, Playa de Mogán

Fiestas del Carmen 2017 

Festivities for the patron saint of Sailors, Virgen del Carmen, come to on end this weekend in Puerto de Mogán.

On Friday there is a concert at 22:30 at Plaza de las Gañanias by Araguaney and Yeray Rodrigúez followed by a after party at the same place.

On Saturday starting at 12:00 Bajada de la Rama, lowering the branch with the Gran Canaria music band at Plaza Dr Pedro Betancor León and at 22:00 Traditional dancing. at 22:30 fiesta time at Plaza de las Gañanias followed by fireworks at midnight.

On Sunday at 10:30 Eucharist at Plaza Dr Pedro Betancor León (previously/also  know as Plaza de Sol ) followed by the maritime procession with the image of Virgen to Arguineguin and back.

(it will be interesting to see what happens after the previous maritime procession from Arguineguín didn’t get very far this year)

28-29 July, Mogán

XXXII Concurso de Pesca de Puerto Rico

The longest running deep sea fishing championship in the Canaries celebrates its thirty-second edition in the waters off the coast of Mogán. The event will have international participants and is based in the Puerto Rico sports harbour, Puerto Base.

The competition is to be held over two days, on Friday and Saturday and has 30-40 vessels participating, representing between 200 and 300 sports fishermen. Fishing time is from 09:30 to 16:30 approximately. Gran Canaria is a privileged spot because it is one of the few places in Europe where you can fish for the coveted Blue Marlin, almost all the year around. These fish, can reach 500 kilos.

As in previous editions, the Gran Canaria Fishing Club promotes responsible fishing. In this way, during the tournament they will enhance the practice of marking and release of any catch, especially any specimens that are less than the weight allowed for sustainable fishing.

Thanks to a communication system established between the boats, the spectators will be able to follow the development of the championship live from the marina in Puerto Rico, keeping track of the trophies and catches that are being achieved throughout the competition.

Saturday 29 July, Plaza Santa Ana, Las Palmas 

Temudas Festival

The 21st edition of this unique Theatre, Music and Dance festival is the meeting point for various world class artists continues this weekend. The festival which has been running from 6 July – 5 August will also feature many free outdoor performances for the public

On Saturday at 22:00 in Plza de Santa Ana a free outdoor concert ( 80 min.)  by B.S.M. de Música de LPGC: Celebration
Celebration is a show based on the music of the 80’s and the events that marked a decade. The Municipal Symphonic Band of Music of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria join the voices of the members of ‘Swing Star’.

Saturday 29 July, Finca Condal, San Bartolomé de Tirajana

Museum and wine 

On Saturdays, Tuesdays and Thursday mornings a chance to see the Finca Condal Museum in Juan Grande.

A walk through 5 centuries of Gran Canaria history, through a beautiful traditional farm house and hermitage aristocratic Bodega Vega Grande, try the delicious cabernet sauvignon 2009. On Saturdays Tapas with the Michelin star Gourmet Chef Angel Palacios.

Resident discounts, free parking. Entry is via the the little church from 12:00-16:00. First tour at 10:30 and the second at 12:00

Saturday 29 July, Telde 

Telde Young Beach Festival

The ‘Telde Young Beach Festival’ floods the beach of La Garita on Saturday with different activities.  The initiative, included in their summer campaign; aimed at the young population and open to all, starting from 18.00 offers concerts in addition to a beach volleyball tournament and various workshops including dancing, acrobatic, juggling, balancing balls and aerial acrobatics during the performances.
