The Canary Weekend Tips 24-26 February’17

A weekend filled with Carnival celebrations and festivities, particularly in the capital Las Palmas where this years events are reaching their crescendo. So many things to go and see.

The TransGranCanaria, running competition, known to be one of the very hardest mountain races in the world, is also held between 22-26 February. The centre of operations is in ExpoMeloneras. Sporting events of this type usually means road closures.

24-26 February, Las Palmas 

Las Palmas Carnival

On Friday the ‘Carnival Queen Gala’ will be at 21:00 on stage in Santa Cantalina park. Fourteen candidates, sponsored by companies and other entities, will compete to be the Carnival Queen. Included among the seventeen different brand names competing is last year’s winners, The Atlantico Shopping Centre, along with the Alcampo Shopping Centre Telde, which has won eight previous Carnvial Queen titles. Carnival night party’ follows from 23:50-05:30 at the back of the Elder and Miller buildings and Plaza Canarias

On Saturday Carnival in the Sun along the Las Canteras beach starting at 17:00. From La Puntilla to Auditorium Alfredo Kraus and vice versa.

The Drag Queen pre selection is at 21:00 choosing from 38 candidates on stage in Parque Santa Catalina, (ticketed event)

23:50-04:30 the 4th ‘Carnival night party’ at the back of the Elder and Miller buildings and Plaza Canarias

On Sunday the special CABALDRAG, celebrating the 20th anniversary of one of the most popular events, the Drag Queen Gala. At the commercial area of Avenida Mesa y López,  starting at 18:00 the ‘red carpet’ drag event with 16 drag queens and special performances.

24-25 February, Gáldar 

Gáldar Carnival, dedicated to Africa, the great continent

On Friday Gáldar’s own Carnival parade through the streets in the centre. Starts at 18:00 and ends to Plaza de Santiago.

On Saturday there is a Daytime African themed Carnival celebrations starting at 12:30 on Plaza de Santiago. A full day of activities until midnight. Buncy castles, workshops, Doggy Carnival at 13:30 an in the evening live concerts .

25-26 February, Ingenio

Carnival Ingenio, Theme: Venice

On Saturday Day Carnival with activities and lots of music performances from 12:00-20:00 at Plaza de la Candelaria

On Sunday, Children Carnival 11:00-14:00 at Plaza de la Candelaria, with inflatable castles, handicraft workshops, animated dolls, Star Wars Gran Canaria, jugglers and music and more and all this, will be spiced up with hot dogs and soft drinks for all children.

Friday 24 February, Mogán, Motor Grande 

Children’s costume party

On Friday, the Mogán neighbourhood Carnival is in Motor Grande, just behind Puerto Rico. Starting at 18:00.  Chocolate and Carnival tortillas, a makeup workshop, carnival costume catwalk, animation, games and minidisco.

Children’s Carnival Fiesta 11:00-14:00 at the open commercial area of Arinaga

On Saturday, the Mogán neighbourhood Carnival  in Barranquillo Andres y Soría starting at 18:00 with lots of activities for the whole family

Saturday 25 February, Jinamar, Shopping Centr El Mirador

II Pasarela Canina 

If you are shopping this weekend and getting those discount prices on the last days of the sales; at CC El Mirador (the one with the big Primark), there is a Canine Runway Show happening on Saturday. Starting at 19:00, 20 dogs competing for the three amazing prices.

Sunday 26 February, San Fernando, San Bartolomé de Tirajana 

Rastro y mercado agricola – Flea Market and Farmers Market

The very popular second hand market in San Fernando, by the town hall and main stadium. In the morning, bargains and treasures to be found.

This Sunday, like every other Sunday, the farmers market is in San Fernando, just next to the second hand stalls
