The Canary Weekend Tips 20-22.01.2017

The almond trees are blossoming up in the mountains and the start of year sales are roaring on. Another lovely weekend ahead with patron saint fiestas, vintage cars cruising the south, markets and the marathon among many other diversions….


21-22 January, Las Palmas 

El Cajasiete ‘Gran Canaria Maratón’ 2017

Europe’s warmest winter marathon event is this weekend in Las Palmas. This eighth edition has already beaten last year’s participant number with 1,384 athletes taking part in the main marathon event and 2,200 runners signed up to the half marathon as well as 2,700 runners taking part in the 10-km race as well as the participants in Saturday’s races.

On Saturday the 3km Gran Canaria accessible race starts at 10:30 with a circuit through Avenida de Las Canteras and the main venue at Plaza de la Musíca . Later in Parque el Rincon, the children’s competitions and event starts with the La Isleña Pasta party at 13:30-15:30 and then the mini marathon at 16:00

On Sunday the XVI Half Marathon (21km) and 42 km long VIII Gran Canaria Marathon start at 08:30
and the VII Gran Canaria 10km starts at 11:30. You can see the routes from the links.

Marathon on Sunday means extensive road closures in Las Palmas ! 


20-22 January, Gáldar 

Recinto Ferial Gáldar 2017

With the on going festivities in honour of San Sebastían, there is an amusement park in Gáldar after a 7 year absence. From 13-29 of January lots of fun with a Viking boat, bumper car track, inflatables, game booths and lot of other attractions for the whole family. The amusement park is set up next to the Municipal sports center in Gáldar.

On Friday the 20th there is a special solidarity Day, over 200 local kids will get in for free and there is also a non perishable food collection and a special entry price for others of €1.

The amusement park opens every day at 17:30 until 29 January.

Fiestas en Honor a San Sebastián, Gáldar 

The main day of the ‘San Sebastián’ Festivities in Gáldar is on Friday 20 January, at 18:00 starts the street procession with the following route, Plaza de San Sebastián, Calle FranciscanosC / San Amaro, Bajada de Las Guayarminas, C/ Capitán Quesada and ending to Plaza de Santiago accompanied by a Musical Group ‘La Pequeña Estefanía’.

This is also a local holiday in the municipality of Gáldar.


Friday 20 January, Agüimes 

A livestock fair and exhibition, Eucharist, procession and a ‘night of Taifa dancing’  

as part of the program for Patron Saint festivities of ‘San Sebastían‘ in Agüimes, there is an exhibition and Livestock Fair on Friday morning from 08:00-10:00 at Paseo de La Viñuela.

11:30 Eucharist at the Templo Parroquial de San Sebastian. at 12:30 cattle fair awards, in front of Templo Parroquial de San Sebastian. Followed by a procession through the streets of the Historic Quarter with the images of San Sebastián and Our Lady of the Rosary. At 20:30 Noche de Taifas, which will be recorded by  Canarian Television.

A lovely day to spend in the picturesque old town of Agüimes following the local Patron Saint festivities.

VII Clasica Mogán 

The seventh edition of this event which sees historic vehicles cruising around the municipalities of Mogán and San Bartolomé de Tirajana, on the south of the island, and taking their time =) It’s also the first test of the season’s scoring for the  XI Classic Cup Gran Canaria 2017 Championship.

The Hotel Cordial Mogán will once again be the main venue so its a good chance to see some beautiful old cars in the morning and at the end of the day (departure at 10:00 and finishes at 16:30)

The route is from Avda. de los Marreros in Puerto de Mogán to Mirador de Arteara and back again.


Sunday 22 January, Agüimes

VI Fiesta del Caracol – Snail Festival!

as part of the Patron Saint festivities of ‘San Sebastian’ the sixth edition of the Snail Festival will be on in Plaza del Rosario in Agüimes.

From 12:00-14:00 an event for food that in this municipality has always been linked to the winter period and where the winning recipes of the V Gastronomic Contest (competition starts at 11:30)will be announced as well as winners in other competitions.

Dishes based on snails can be tasted as well as the best cheese and honeys of Gran Canaria accompanied by traditional rope dance and folk music performances. 

9 restaurants in the historical center of Agüimes will offer dishes made with snail in their menu, from January 18-31, so that people who love these molluscs can enjoy the various recipes prepared by the participants at popular prices: Bar San Antón, Bar Tasca Mi Pueblo, Bar Alegranza, Bar/Café El Populacho, Bar La Estación, Bar El Lagarto, Restaurante Señorío de Agüimes, Restaurante El Alpendre del Arte, Restaurante Villa Rosa
