The Canary Weekend Tips 14-16 July’17

A gorgeous hot, sultry July weekend ahead on Gran Canaria with heatwave warning 34˚+ in the shade, and many lovely events going on around the island. Summer’s here to stay!

It`s the main festive weekend in the southern fishing town of Arguineguin with the Virgen del Carmen celebrations and hundreds of boats on the water, free concerts and performances at the Heineken Jazz festival and the Temudas theatre, music and dance festival. The famous water Festival in Teror, with their Romeria pilgrimage offering on Saturday, as well as up in the old northern capital of Gáldar the Fiesta de Mayores de Santiago.  The world windsurfing competition comes to end this weekend in Pozo Izquierdo and there are free stretching sessions as well as Tai-chi on offer in the south.

14-16 July, Arguineguin, Mogán

Fiesta del Carmen

Friday 14 July : Bajada de la Rama, the lowering of the branch (a colloquial add on to many traditional festivities here on the island, incorporating pre-christian traditions of lowering a tree branch to the sea as an offering, to bring rain). The departure from Plazade Pino Seco is at 18:30. In the evening musical performances at the Plaza de las Marañuelas starting at 23:00

Saturday 15 July : activities for children between 11:00-14:00 at Plaza de las Marañuelas.
The Eucharist and procession with statues from the main church to Marañuelas beach at 20:00, followed by fireworks at midnight and a big party afterwards with live music performances.

Sunday 16 July : Dia de nuestra Senora del Carmen. The main day of sea-faring celebration.
Eucharist mass at 10:30 followed by the famous maritime procession, where the main boat carries a statue of the Virgen del Carmen round the coast to Puerto de Mogán and back again accompanied by hundreds of boats and partiers.

Meanwhile in Puerto de Mogan : Mass at Plaza Dr. Pedro Betancor León at 20:00 in , followed by a land procession. And at the fishing harbour a seafood gastronomy fair and music.

Places to watch the procession, from Arguineguin harbour, all the way along the south west coast to the beautiful Puerto de Mogan.

14-16 July, Teror

Festival de Aqua

As part of the Water Festival program, on Saturday, the traditional Romeria Pilgrimage in Honor of San Isidro Labrador (the labourer) with the participation of the carts, wagons, folk groups and dance groups of the municipality. The route starts from the Castañero Gordo at 18:30 and travels to Plaza de Sintes  (in front of the auditorium ). After the pilgrimage some traditional taifa dancing and at 23:00 a fireworks display at the same plaza.

On Sunday, Baile de Mercadillo at Plaza de Sintes at 11:00. Cattle fair at Yánez Matos ground, next to the bus stop from 08:00-14:00.
Mass in honour of San Isidro Labrador in the famous old church Basílica del Pino at 13:00 and afterwards the best of the cattle fair will be present at the procession on Calle Real and Plaza Ntra Sra. del Pino starting at 14:00.

14- 16 July 
Gran Canaria Wind & Waves Festival

Gran Canaria Wind & Waves Festival, PWA World Windsurfing Tour Gran Canaria at Pozo Izquierdo beach. With the best of the best in the world present for the competition, the event also features workshops, children’s activities, beach cleaning, live music, the best dj’s and other great surprises. The main hub and nerve centre will be the 700 square metre tent installed on the beach.

Its the final weekend:
Friday : start of the competition at 10:00 ( weather permitting ) at 16:00 Childrens’ activities : bouncy castles and workshops and at 23:00 its party time with some live concerts.

On Saturday, start of the competition from 10:00  ( weather permitting ) at 11:30 childrens’ activities: closing ceremony at 20:00 and after a party with concerts . On Sunday at 12:00 beach cleaning.

14-16 July, Gran Canaria 

Festival Internacional Canarias Jazz & más Heineken

The 26th edition of the Jazz festival is happening at the same time on several Canary Islands. As well as performances and clubs night on Gran Canaria there are also free public outside concerts.

On Friday in Vecindario at Plaza San Rafael, starting at 21:00  Becca Stevens – Regina Tour and  Ximo Tebar ‘Soleo’ Band The New Son Mediterráneo

On Saturday in Santa Brigida at Parque Municipal de Santa Brigida ( Calle la Nueva 13 ) starting at 21:00 ‘Ella at 100‘ The Latin side of Ella Fitzgerald, Ivan Lins & Band

Friday 14 July, Agüimes 

III Noche de Vinos de Gran Canaria en Agüimes

Agüimes is having their 3rd edition of the night of wines in the picturesque and historic centre, Plaza de Nuestra Señora del Rosario in front of the church. The wine night is held from 20:00 to 01:00 with eleven island wineries as well as ten local food establishments. Visitors can enjoy a glass of wine for 1 or 2 euros accompanied by a skewer of tasty local food for the same price in the 21 stalls which will be erected in the square.

The historic center of Agüimes is a beautiful place to visit with an authentic traditional feeling; old buildings, cobblestone roads and loads of statues scattered around. Definitely worth a visit!

Friday 14 July, Las Palmas 

Temudas Festival

The 21st edition of this unique Theatre, Music and Dance festival is the meeting point for various world class artists and starts in earnest this weekend. The festival runs from 6 July – 5 August also features many free outdoor performances for the public in Plaza de Santa Ana and Plaza del Pilar Nuevo in Las Palmas.

On Friday, a multidisciplinary show by DAVID MORENO & CÍA: ESENCIA (ESPAÑA)( 40 minutes ) , starting at 22:00 at Plaza de Santa. it will be spectacular.

Saturday 15 July, Gáldar 

Fiestas Mayores de Santiago 2017

Saturday, Romeria, the Traditional pilgrimage offering to Santiago de los Caballeros de Gáldar (James of the Knights of Gáldar). Starting at 18:00 on the streets in the Historic Quarter. The tour will begin in the Bajada de Las Guayarminas, continuing through the streets Cápitan Quesada and Plaza de Santiago. followed by the offerings at Plaza de Santiago, traditional Taifa dancing and music.

Saturday 15 July, Playa del Inglés, San Bartolomé de Tirajana

We are Taichi

Every Saturday during the Summer months of June, July, August and September 2017, Master Kim Kyoung Bo and the town hall of SBT offer free outdoor Tai chi and meditation classes in Playa del Inglés as part of their summer activities.

Sunday 16 July, Agaete 

Mercado Artesanal de julio

On Sunday, from 11:00 to 17:00 a craft market in Agaete, on the beautiful northwestern coast of the island. The market is held on Calle Nuestra Señora de Las Nieves in the coastal district, close to the ferry harbour.

The day will also offer musical moments thanks to the performance of the soloist ‘Miguel’ and the group ‘Son of Caney’ who will share their best songs starting at 13:00.

This craft market is organized by the Department of Crafts of the Town of Agaete and has the collaboration of the Cabildo of Gran Canaria, through the Foundation for Ethnography and Development of Canarian Craft (Fedac).
