The Canary Weekend Tips 1-3 September’17

September is here and its going to be a lovely first weekend. As ever the island network of museums open their doors for free visits as does Triana, the commercial area in Las Palmasm who have their open weekend. In Mogán, there is a big wine and tapas night as well as the second edition of the mango and summer avocado fair, in Playa de Mogán. Patron Saint celebrations continue in towns and villages around the island as well as various lovely markets and musical performances. Here are our hand picked weekend events to start the month of September.

31 August – 3 September, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria 

Cinemas+Food 2017

The 8th edition of food and film in Santa Catalina Park, at the Elder Museum of Science and Technology and in El Muelle Shopping Centre, starts from August 31st.

About sixty films, including some national premieres, make up the highlights of Cine + Food 2017, which runs throughout the weekend to 3 September in Parque Santa Catalina and also offers cuisine from four continents.

Friday 1 September, Arinaga, Agüimes 

Vara del Pescao – Romeria Arinaga

Fiestas de nuestra señora del Pino y XXIII edicion de la vara del pesca.

The fiesta of The Fishing Rod. A lively traditional pilgrimage that attracts thousands of people, where Avenida Playa de Arinaga fills with music and celebrants, accompanied by hundreds of kilos of roasted sardines as well as a cup or two of rum. This is all about old fishing traditions, from the days when the fishermen used to walk the streets calling neighbours to come and buy fresh fish, by blowing through conch shells and making lots of noise.

During the festival there is a simulation of the arrival of the fishermen to the port, once they arrive the sardines are roasted and distributed among all the revellers to the rhythm of local live music, as a procession of carts and various decorated floats in the shape of a boat are paraded along the avenue, partying well into the night, the festival is interrupted only by the spectacular maritime fireworks.

2-3 September, Mogán

Wine & Tapas night & the Mango and Summer Avocado Fair 

There is a public Wine and Tapas Night this Saturday, with several local restaurants and bars participating. Tastings based around the flavours of mangoes and summer avocados as well as other local gastronomy. The Wine Night will feature produce from wineries based throughout the island of Gran Canaria.

2ª Feria del Mango y Aguacate de Verano de Mogán on Sunday, 3 Sep. Local farmers market, gastronomy area and much more. From 10:00-14:00 in Plaza de las Gañanías

2-3 September, Gran Canaria

As with every first weekend of a month, the island network of museums run by the island council, the Cabildo de Gran Canaria, will open their doors for free visits.

Museums: Casa de Colón, (in Las Palmas) Saturday 10:00-18:00 and Sunday 10:00-15:00
Casa-Museo Perez Galdos, (in Las Palmas) Saturday and Sunday, from 10:00-19.00
Casa-Museo Tomas Morales, (in Moya), Saturday and Sunday, from 10:00-19.00
Casa-Museo León y Castillo , (in Telde), Saturday 10:00-22:00 and Sunday 10:00-19:00.
Casa-Museo Antonio Padron -Indian Art Centre (in Gáldar) Saturday and Sunday, from 10:00-19.00.
Museum and Archaeological Park Cueva Pintada (in Gáldar) Saturday, from 10:30-19:30 and Sunday, from 11:00-19.00. First visit on Saturday at 10:30 and Sundays at 11:00. Last guided tour on Saturday at 18:00 and Sunday at 17:30. Limited capacity.

2-3 September, Las Palmas 

Triana, Fin de Semana Abierto

The open comericial area Triana is  themed in “back to school” mode for its Open Weekend- event.
Activities for the little ones and a complete plan of leisure and shops open during the “fin de semana abierto” offer clothing and items focused towards those with little ones returning to school. The agenda runs throughout the weekend of Saturday 2 and Sunday 3 September, when once more the shops of the capitals main shopping street extend business hours on each first weekend of the month. Bars and restaurants participate along Calle Mayor and surroundings, offering some family diversion and fun, before the schools start up again here.

On Saturday between 11:00-14:00,  craft workshops, makeup and face-painting, spaces to play and even giant lego. In addition, Rafaelillo the Clown will again amuse the children

On Sunday, the day is extended until 18:00 hours. Musical performances in Shack Bar (13:00 -18:00) , an exhibition of vinyl records and secondhand clothes (11:00- 18:00), on Calle Torres 13, other activities include a makeup and characterisation workshop (corner of Triana with Cano), and a print shirts workshop (Triana, 66) along with many others.

Saturday 2 September, Tasarte, La Aldea de San Nicolás

On Saturday a little market in west coast town of La Aldea de San Nicolás from 09:00-14:00 in the open commercial area with raffles, workshops, various activities, music, a wide variety of local products, solidarity projects.

Sunday 3 September, Parque Sur, Maspalomas

Lilly Rikhter is a personal fitness trainer based on Gran Canaria who works with people at all levels to help them get the best out of their bodies. Her session happens every Sunday throughout the year, and over the next three months she invites anyone looking for better mobility, more supple joints or who simply wants to help their body to feel great, to come join us in a training session thats easy enough for complete beginners and thorough enough to make a real difference in any bodies’ life.

Sunday 3 September, Arinaga, Agüimes

Feria de Cuidados Básicos de Mascotas

The 3rd edition of the ‘Basic Care of Pets’ Fair is happening on Sunday from 17.30 to 20.30 pm at Plaza de Arinaga. The objective of this initiative is to raise awareness and encourage more knowledge about responsible pet ownership, in order to improve animal welfare and contribute to improving the quality of lives of citizens.
During the day there will be various activities. Promotional stalls for pet adoption. Animal charities and veterinary clinics. The municipal animal collection service of Agüimes will provide information on dogs that are available for adoption.

18:00 Canine Training : basic obedience – sport and substance detection, presented by the Lucky Dog Club.
18:30 Dog-assisted therapy workshop, by Sergio Ramírez, Manager of NAHAI. Psychological, Educational and Social Intervention.

19:00 photography contest award: “Enjoy this summer with your pet”.

Sunday 3 September, El Tablero, SBT 

Evento de verano en El Pilar

The Town Council of San Bartolomé de Tirajana have organised various social and cultural events around municipality runnign between September to December including concerts, theatre performances, dance festivals, films and various recitals.

The first of these shows will take place on Sunday in the neighbourhood of El Tablero on Sunday from 13:00 to 21:00 at Plaza de El Pilar. Offering entertainment from duo Yet Garbey and Willy Flores
