60 Businesses, Community Organisations and Individuals were shortlisted by English speakers for The Canary Awards 2017 out of more than 100 who were originally put forward.
You can still have your say at TheCanaryAwards.com/Vote – Voting ends this Sunday (April 30), and the awards will be announced the following
Saturday, May 6th in the heart of Puerto Rico.
12 winning organisations and individuals will be selected by our readers in the public vote. We would like to welcome anyone who wishes to join in recognising their representatives collecting an award and take part in a photograph for our English language publication The Canary News, Views & Sunshine.
We will also be filming the event.
The outstanding soul talent of Mr Dean Facey will be joining us as our star attraction for the event.
There is a small charge for non-nominees to attend. And for those who wish to dine with us, advance reservations are available and required for dinner at a very good price direct from the website TheCanaryAwards.com.
Or by calling 928 987 952 or emailing TheCanaryAwards@TheCanaryNews.com
We would love to see you there.
The English language community newspaper, The Canary News, Views & Sunshine has been published by a voluntary group for the last 7 years, supported by local businesses. We print monthly reaching at least 10,000 readers, with our website publishing daily news and reaching 15-20,000 unique people every month having a reach of 50-200,000 social media followers every week, a quarter of whom engage with our content.
Our combined audience is easily more than 50,000 English speaking individuals, at least a third of whom are from the UK.
This year we have been trying something new, and quietly launched The Canary Awards, as a way to ask our readers to recommend businesses and individuals who they feel represent Gran Canaria best, through their commitment to service and quality and of course to the English speaking community (of all nations) who live here and visit.
We started in October 2016 and simply asked for open nominations, anyone who might deserve recognition. We received several hundred nominations for more than 100 businesses, community organisations and individuals. Nominations closed on February 28th.
We then organised 12 categories of shortlisted nominees, five in each category, who we could compare in a public vote, which was announced on March 6th, and voting began on March 13th.
Voters had to register with their email address and then could vote on the 12 categories (selecting from 60 shortlisted nominees). Security features helped ensure a fair and accurate vote count.
We received more than 1000 votes cast on the first day of voting, with many thousands more having come in over the last 6 weeks.
Though every nominated business is clearly recommended and a winner in the public´s eyes, we will announce the winners with the most votes on May 6th in Puerto Rico, at a rooftop restaurant overlooking the beach.
Nominated businesses are also welcome to bring some promotional material, to share with the audience and other nominees who will be present. The event is being recorded and photographed, and may even be broadcast live.
This is the first time we have tried this, and the process has so far been a resounding success. So we will be sure to recreate the event on a much larger scale in future years, but for now, we hope to have your support on this first event, and in exchange we will feature all shortlisted nominees in our publication as the people’s choice for 2017.
