Valsequillo Strawberry Fair, Gran Canaria

It’s that time of the year again when you can almost taste summer, and what better way than in form of some of the best strawberries grown in The Canary Islands?

More than one thousand kilos of strawberries are being collected just for the free tastings at this year’s fifth edition of the Strawberry Fair in Valsequillo, this Sunday, the 30th of April, la Dia de La Fresa “Day of The Strawberry”.

Strawberries with cream, strawberries with honey, ice cream, smoothies, juices and various sweets made with strawberry are just some of the produce to be enjoyed. A perfect day out for the whole family, particularly on a weekend when the beaches may be a little greyer than usual, but the mountains are expecting some blue skies.

Throughout the day there will be a dessert contests with local strawberries, show cooking with strawberries and other Valsequillo products, a living museum of strawberries and crop projections, a guided route through the strawberry farms,  tastings and more tastings of strawberries, activities and workshops for children, games an inflatable castle for the little ones, sale of produce related to strawberries from throughout the municipality.

The guided tours through farms are being offered so that visitors can learn about the various phases of production, (tours are almost certainly in Spanish, but well worth joining even if you don´t speak the lingo), while enjoying the beautiful local agrarian landscape.

Strawberries are not only a delicious fruit, but also loaded with numerous health benefits. Low in calories, diuretic and very rich in fibre so they are a great help to intestinal transit. An excellent source of vitamin C, beta carotene, vitamin E, antioxidants and of the minerals they contain calcium, iodine, phosphorus, magnesium, iron and potassium and also folic acid which in natural medicine is used to clean and purify the digestive system.
