The Saint: Las Palmas V Sevilla
After the disappointing performance on Sunday against Rayo Vallecano, Las Palmas face a difficult home game against last seasons’ Europa League winners Sevilla.
Sevilla are the most successful club in the southern region of Andalusia, and are also looking for their first win of the season.
A lively start to the match with the home side winning a couple of free kicks in good positions.
On 8mins the first yellow card goes to Wakaso for the home side, the former Celtic winger booked for a bad foul.
1st chance for Sevilla falls to Ciro who’s neat turn and shot was just to high. Best chance so far goes to Sevilla, a good passing move by the visitors, sets up Coke, but his shot goes just passed the post. They were unlucky there.
The play moves straight up the other end, the ball falls nicely for Roque, his left foot shot from the centre of the box finds the bottom corner of the goal. 1-0 Las Palmas. The crowd goes wild as that was the first home goal of the season.
Good move down the left wing, ball pulled back to Araujo, but his shot is over the bar. More pressure by the home side keeps the game on the visitors.
HT – Las Palmas 1 Sevilla 0 – At last we see a goal for LP, Another tight game with both teams cancelling each other out. LP are playing a lot quicker football tonight and looking more dangerous in attack. Let’s hope they can keep it up in the 2nd half.
Another good move from the home team on 56mins, again Simon puts in a nice pass and sends Viera clear in the box but Rico in the visitors’ goal denies Viera his chance.
On 62mins, a good chance falls to Sevilla after some great work from the former Arsenal player Reyes but a fast sliding tackle by Alcaraz for the home team denies Sevilla.
A great reception for former LP player Vitolo when he comes on as sub for the visitors, I hope he doesn’t score against us!
More attacking play by Sevilla and the home defence becomes a bit stretched.
They win a couple of corners. Varas in the home goal is lucky when he comes in for a cross, dropps the ball but luckily it’s cleared from danger.
Then on 76mins, Araujo finds some space on the right wing, he takes his time and picks out Alcaraz who firmly puts his header past the keeper to make it 2-0 to Las Palmas. A well taken goal with great work by Araujo.
The last 10mins of the match sees a few half chances fall to Sevilla, but the home defence stands firm and a couple of good saves prevents the visitors from staging a come back.
Final Score – Las Palmas 2 Sevilla 0
The Verdict of The Saint – A much better performance by the home side. With the pace of Wakaso in midfield, they played a quicker tempo and created more chances. It was great to see them score their first goals at home and the 19,733 crowd got right behind the team in the second half. The former Everton and Wigan defender Alcaraz capped an excellent display with the second goal. This should give the team confidence now to play more attacking at home and for their game on Saturday at Barcelona. Next home game is against Eibar on Satruday 3rd October , KO 21.00hrs.
