Las Palmas V Raya Vallecano
Las Palmas entertained Madrid base Raya Vallecano last Sunday in their second home game of the season. This match follows a much deserved draw last week away to Celta Vigo where LP came back from 3-1 down with 10 men to force a draw.
Before kick off, Raya Vallecano were sitting 2nd from bottom, this is the sort of team LP needs to beat if they want to stay up this season.
After a slow start the visitors had their first chance of the match on 7 mins; Raul, in the home goal, comes outside of his box to head clear and the follow up shot flies straight into his hands. A lucky escape.
On 13 mins, LP win a free kick in a good position on the edge of the box but the shot, by Viera, is too high from a difficult angle.
First yellow card of the game goes to Rayo player Raul for a bad tackle. Then in the space of a couple of mins, LP get 2 very good chances, the first falls to Jonathan Viera who’s header goes straight at the keeper from good work down the right from Simon. Then again Viera is set up nicely by Araujo and with only the keeper to beat hits his shot high over the bar. He should have scored there. Another chance for LP, this time Roque left foot shot from outside of the box is saved.
Another yellow card for Rayo, Amaya was lucky to stay on after a really bad tackle.
Best move of the game so far starts from the LP defence, they move the ball quickly and again Viera finds himself in a good position just on the edge of the box but again shoots wide. Then on 41mins, against the run of play, LP find themselves a goal down. Rayo’s corner wasn’t cleared and Guerra was put through looping the ball over the rushing keeper. He looked offside but the goal is given.
Half Time – Las Palmas will be very disappointed to go in at HT losing this match. They had 2 really good chances both falling to Viera where he should of scored. They need to attack more in the 2nd half and put more pressure on the Rayo defence.
LP start the 2nd half with 2 good moves seeing both Roque and Simon get close for the home team.
Bebe for Rayo has a great 35yard shot which just misses the right hand top corner.
Again Bebe goes close with another long range shot.
LP brings on new signing and ex Celtic player Wakaso to inject some much needed pace down the left. Within 30 seconds he picks up a yellow card for a foul. At least he’s showing some fight!!
LP are getting frustrated and giving away some stupid fouls.
Rayo looking dangerous on the break with LP pushing more men forward looking for the equaliser.
In the last 10 mins Rayo look the more likely team to score with the home side running out of ideas and not breaking down the Rayo defence.
Rayo have a couple of chances in the last few mins and the game ends in a very disappointing result for the home side.
Las Palmas 0 – Rayo Vallecano 1
The Verdict of The Saint – Poor home performance from LP in a game from which they needed to pick up the 3 points. They ran out of ideas in the second half and they should have taken their chances in the first. Last year they were playing a lot more attacking football at home and the jump to La Liga has seen them playing 5 at the back which makes them more defensive. They will need to become more attacking at home if they want to remain in the league. The 19,324 crowd were trying their best to lift the team but I can see the crowd turning against the manager if home performance doesn’t improve and with much more attacking play. Next game is on Wednesday night 23rd at home to Sevilla, 21.00hrs KO. PIO PIO !!
