The Canary Islands have an appointment this Saturday with the F-18 aircraft of the Spanish Air Force 462 Wing 46th Squadron based at Gando airbase. On Friday they flew across the islands to prepare for the airshow on Saturday over Tenerife and Gran Canaria.
The military practice took many citizens of the city by surprise, according to Spanish language daily LaProvincia, as there was a lot of noise from overhead in the streets of the capital. Some residents reportedly expressed their displeasure though there were no major incidents.
On Saturday evening the 46th are to perform fly-pasts over the capitals of both provinces in the sub-tropical archipelago, which this year includes an air parade. F-18 aircraft, operationally tasked with patrolling the eastern Atlantic from Europe´s most southerly NATO island outpost, will flay over Santa Cruz de Tenerife and then Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. The air show is scheduled shortly after 19.00 over Tenerife and then at 19.45 in Gran Canaria .
In particular, the events in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria are centred around ‘Plaza de las Islas Canarias‘ near the main cruise dock, where from 12.00 a static exhibition of diverse military materials are on display from the Army, Navy, Airforce, Guardia Civil and Emergency Military Units.
The main event takes place at 19:30 with a solemn lowering of the flag in homage to the fallen. Once the Spanish flag is lowered, it will be delivered to the Alejandro Da Silva Canaria Foundation against Leukemia, for their efforts to improve the quality of life of patients and their families. The event will be chaired by the chief of Canary Islands Air Command, Fernando de la Cruz de Caravaca, and will be attended by the first civilian and military authorities of the archipelago as well as representatives of the business world, the arts and culture.
The event ends with a military and popular music concert from the Canary Islands Air Command Music Unit and the Canary Islands XVI Light Infantry Brigade Banda de Guerra nº1, which begins at 20:15.
The Canary Islands Air Command are celebrating Armed Forces Day with events organised by the Canary Islands Air Command (MACAN) among others including a tribute to those who have given their life for Spain.
