Costa Mogán Carnival is aimed at both tourists and residents of the municipality and last year an estimated 20,000 people participated and enjoyed the events, according to the town hall. The Carnival Costa Mogán this year has the support of the Tourist Board and the Cabildo de Gran Canaria with an investment of an extra €10,000
On Sunday and Monday ‘pasacalles’ ( street processions with rhythmic samba music and dancers ) have been passing by the beaches of Amadores and Puerto Rico and will perform at the Puerto Rico Shopping Center on Monday evening at 20:00.
The 2017 program offers plenty of activities, which are also free, including the Drag Queen election, burial and burning of the sardine and of course the main parade, which will have at least a dozen floats and which last year was attended by more than 10,000 people.
On Tuesday afternoon, March 14, the Carnival program starts with a new initiative, an opening parade, that will tour the streets of Arguineguín, inviting pedestrians to join the route of the batucadas ( rhytmic music groups ) and comparsas ( dance groups) that will end in Plaza Negra, the area where the Tuesday market and the Saturday secondhand market are usually held, which will be, where most of the activities, galas and verbenas ( after parties ) will be held next to the almost 30 metre mainstage.
Think fairground, meets street party and you’ll get a feel for what to expect.
Among the new features of the 2017 program are the activities scheduled for Friday, March 17, the Carnival circus wig party, with DJs playing music, performing jugglers and fire eaters. This is a party that brings the most people together to consolidate the theme with plenty of dancing in the streets.
Another novelty this year is the children’s costume party that will be held for the first time during the Sunday afternoon, March 19, with animation, a costume catwalk, games, chocolate and carnival tortillas. After the children’s party, the burial of the sardine will take place and put an end to another year’s carnival transgressions.
Tuesday 14 March, ‘opening street procession’ from Plaza de Pino Seco commences at 20:00 and travels through the street of Arguineguin
Wednesday 15 March, ‘gala del pueblo’ ( local Gala ) starting at 20:00 on the stage at Plaza del Mercadillo, with music and dance performances.
Thursday 16 March, The Drag Queen Gala at 21:00 on the stage at Plaza del Mercadillo
Friday 17 March, the Carnival Circus ‘Wig’ Party at 19:00 with DJ’s and circus fun in Plaza del Mercadillo
( dress code : a wig and then some ) and at midnight verbena, the after party
Saturday 18 March, THE PARADE starting at 19:00 from El Timonel and at 21:30 party continues at the marketplace
Sunday 19 March, Childrens Carnival costume party starting at 17:00 at Plaza del Mercadillo and at 19:30 the Burial wake of the Sardine and at 20:15 the Sardine is taken to the beach for the burial burning and of course there will be fireworks
