Carnival Costa Mogán 14-19 March 2017

Carnival Costa Mogán 2017 starts this Tuesday, March 14th. The theme for this year, selected by popular vote, is dedicated to the world of circus.

Costa Mogán Carnival is aimed at both tourists and residents of the municipality and last year an estimated 20,000 people participated and enjoyed the events, according to the town hall. The Carnival Costa Mogán this year has the support of the Tourist Board and the Cabildo de Gran Canaria with an investment of an extra €10,000

On Sunday and Monday  ‘pasacalles’ ( street processions with rhythmic samba music and dancers ) have been passing by the beaches of Amadores and Puerto Rico and will perform at the Puerto Rico Shopping Center on Monday evening at 20:00.

The 2017 program offers plenty of activities, which are also free, including the Drag Queen election, burial and burning of the sardine and of course the main parade, which will have at least a dozen floats and which last year was attended by more than 10,000 people.

On Tuesday afternoon, March 14, the Carnival program starts with a new initiative, an opening parade, that will tour the streets of Arguineguín, inviting pedestrians to join the route of the batucadas ( rhytmic music groups ) and comparsas ( dance groups)  that will end in Plaza Negra, the area where the Tuesday market and the Saturday secondhand market are usually held, which will be, where most of the activities, galas and verbenas ( after parties ) will be held next to the almost 30 metre mainstage.

Think fairground, meets street party and you’ll get a feel for what to expect.

Among the new features of the 2017 program are the activities scheduled for Friday, March 17, the Carnival circus wig party, with DJs playing music, performing jugglers and fire eaters. This is a party that brings the most people together to consolidate the theme with plenty of dancing in the streets.

Another novelty this year is the children’s costume party that will be held for the first time during the Sunday afternoon, March 19, with animation, a costume catwalk, games, chocolate and carnival tortillas. After the children’s party, the burial of the sardine will take place and put an end to another year’s carnival transgressions.
